The Future of Child Welfare in Canada conference 2018 

For the first time, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada was invited to attend and present at the Future of Child Welfare in Canada conference, hosted by the Prairie Child Welfare Consortium (PCWC); Provincial and Territorial directors on child welfare; and faculty of social work, university of Calgary. This 9th biennial event was the first conference to be held on a national level.

 

Foundation staff attending the conference presented “From Surviving to Thriving – The effects of Post-secondary Education for child welfare youth”, a study conducted in partnership with the child welfare institute at Children Aid Society of Toronto.

This study highlights the importance of supporting youth early (starting in Grades 1-3) and throughout the entire in-care term through focused educational planning and support to ensure high school graduation is achieved out through the in-care experience and having multiple placements and schools moved.
