As Canada’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, and families involved in the child welfare system, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada depends on the generosity of donors to fuel our mission. With their support, we fund vital programs and services that give young people in care the opportunities, stability, and supports they deserve.
Laurie-Ann, a dedicated member of our donor community, embodies the compassion and commitment that make this work possible. We spoke with her about what drives her to give and why she believes in standing up for kids in care.
Why do you donate to our cause? And why specifically do you donate to Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada?
I began donating to Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada about ten years ago when I became familiar with the Children’s Aid Society through its adoption process.
As part of my research, I discovered the incredible work of Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada and decided to become a donor to support the funding of its programs, especially given the inconsistent and insufficient government funding for children in the province’s care.
Why is it important to support families, children and youth involved in child welfare?
Supporting children and youth should be a core priority for the government. Every child deserves to live in a safe environment and have equal access to healthcare, education, and skills training resources. I personally feel a responsibility to financially contribute, particularly to support children/youth from Black and Indigenous communities
In your opinion, what are the most important issues impacting these populations that Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada helps tackle?
I think the key issues include a lack of funding, limited employment opportunities, and institutional racism that perpetuates inequality and inconsistent access to necessary resources, especially in education and healthcare sectors. The Foundation provides programs that can help bridge these gaps.
What would you say to someone who is unsure about donating to our organization?
I view charitable giving as a personal decision and would not feel comfortable discussing it with friends or colleagues, as everyone has their own reasons for supporting the causes they care about.
Which areas can the Foundation improve upon that may inspire others such as yourself to donate?
The Foundation has excellent programs, but before my personal connection through adoption, I was not aware of the full scope of issues and challenges faced by children/youth in the foster care system. The organization would likely benefit from more targeted marketing to showcase its programs, which could help attract new donors.
